Surfing melted snow?  That’s what summer brings in Wyoming.  Miles from ocean swells, “river junkies” grab their surfboards and take advantage of the rushing water running from the mountains.

Thursday Grab Bag: A Bike With a Brain?!

Funny No Comments

Have you heard about Precious?  No, not the movie, or the ring from Lord of the Rings fame, this Precious is a bike with an on board computer “brain” that allows the bike to tweet updates as it travels cross country.

The bike is powered by a rider named Janeen, but the updates are all up to the bike itself.

The entire project was created to raise money for the Livestrong foundation.  So far Precious the tweeting bike has raised close to $6,000 and has been on the road for 67 days.

Thursday Grab Bag: Swimsuit Dress

The Speedo LZR cocktail dress

This isn’t the kind of bathing suit with an a skirt attached that your grandma wears, this fashion forward dress is made from a Speedo LZR swimsuit.

The very same full-body swimsuit that had athletes, including our own Michael Phelps, setting records left and right in the 2008 Olympics.  Since, FINA, the governing body of swimming, has outlawed the suits categorizing their technology as body altering.  The high cost of the suits combined with the panels of material that provided compression and has less friction in the water than skin, was deemed to be an unfair advantage and the suits are now banned in competition.

The surplus Speedo stock was sold to a designer known for minimizing textile waste who produced this high fashion cocktail dress.  So the question is, will this be the new outfit of choice for swimmers on the medals podium at the 2012 Olympics?

Thursday Grab Bag: Recycle Raft

Team H2O Audio Kayaker Garrett aboard his recycle raft.

As surfers, swimmers, and athletes in general, we tend to spend more time outdoors than most people, which means the health of our environment and planet is important to us.  We recycle everything we can in our office, but one of our Team H2O Audio Kayakers took recycling to a whole new level.  While working as an instructor in Pennsylvania for the summer, Garett Scott took on an extra project.  He constructed a raft using 100% recycled materials, successfully piloted it down river and then broke everything down and put it back to use.  Read more about Garrett’s mission, and why he took it on, in his blog.

We’re glad our waterproof headphones and cases kept Garrett rockin’ out while he was recycling and that his project was a success!

Thursday Grab Bag: Have you seen this pool?

Funny No Comments

Can you guess what this pool is made from?

We’ve been hearing it for a while now…the infamous “Water Cube” in Beijing where Michael Phelps racked up his collection of gold medals, is being turned into a water park.  Well, it’s finally open, and I have to say, it looks pretty darn fun.  See pictures of what it looks like!

Would you want to go swimming in a dumpster?  For those in some urban areas, the answer is, yes!  A firm called Macro Sea is refurbishing old dumpsters and converting them into urban watering holes.  While it may seem odd at first thought, the dumpster pools are easier to set up and run than traditional above ground pools and are bringing much needed cooling off to heat stricken cities.
