New data on choosing running shoes comes from a bit of an unlikely source, The US Army. When you think of how much time Army, Marine and Air Force basic trainees spend running, it does make a bit more sense that the military would look into the best way to support a runners foot. In their study the US military looked at over 9,000 pairs of feet and found that matching foot shapes to specific types of athletic shoes had very little to no impact on the number of injuries caused by running. The conclusion of their data was to simply pick a shoe that feels most comfortable and not worry about whether it’s ergonomically the best shoe for your foot.
