In 2002 Natalie Coughlin broke the world record in the 100m backstroke and became the first woman to do it under the 60 sec mark. At the Olympic trials in June Hayley McGregory broke Natalie’s former mark of 59.21 in prelims with a time of 59.15 sec. In the very next heat Natalie pulled an “oh no you di’int!” and reclaimed her world record with a time of 59.03 sec. That’s our girl!
