iPod scroll wheel sensors work by using an electrical phenomenon called capacitance. Whenever two electrically conductive objects come near each other without actually touching, their electric fields interact to form a capacitance. The human finger is a good electrical conductor. When you place your finger on the scroll wheel a capacitance forms between your finger and the metal wires under the scroll wheel.

In a nutshell, the electrical conductivity of the Commander scroll wheel replaces the conductivity of your finger allowing you to operate your iPod underwater. Sweet…
